Random Shots – latest news
First can I wish you all a very merry, prosperous and above all safe new year!
2025 is packed with matches, both in Great Britain and across the IPSC community, with many more chances for us to support UKPSA clubs across all the disciplines and to gain international experience working abroad.
Many thanks to the NROI Secretary Jason Clarke, working closely with Kev Strowger for organising this bumper calendar with our clubs and for their efforts to avoid clashes with all those major international events, which include four IPSC World Championships in 2025, not to mention the Shotgun European Championships.
Can I remind NROI members that you need to work at least one Level 2 or 3 UKPSA match a year in Great Britain to maintain your membership. You have an early opportunity with the first three matches of the year being in Scotland, Northern England and Southern England. There are many more matches spread across Britain and different disciplines, so it will certainly be much easier to find a maintenance match.
Don’t forget that as the 2024 competition season has come to an end, and you want the NROI Committee to record any Level 1 or overseas IPSC matches (for promotion purposes only) then please do complete and send us your match points record card to NROI@UKPSA.ORG
Take care and stay safe.

New Year – New Rules!
As you may know a new set of IPSC rules (2025 Edition) has been published.
These include all the changes agreed at the IPSC General Assembly in Argentina in November, where I had the honour and privilege of representing Great Britain on behalf of our Regional Director, Kevin Strowger.
The changes range across all the IPSC rule sets but mostly focus on clarifying existing IPSC rules and interpretations.
To help you pick up the changes there are ‘marked up’ versions of the 2025 Edition IPSC rules for you to study and/or download. See the following where changes are marked in red text:
IPSC Action Air Handgun Rules 2025
IPSC .22 LR Handgun Rules 2025
Also I have put together a quick (and anonymous) quiz HERE if you would like to test your knowledge of the changes (as it is based on a Google Form the quiz may require a Google Account to access).
UKPSA Matches for 2025
You can see the current 2025 match calendar HERE on the UKPSA website with 14 national or international matches listed and more I understand to follow.
It won’t be long until the competition season kicks off in Glasgow with an Action Air level 2 run by Recoil Scotland but at a new venue. Followed by an opportunity to get some serious Mini Rifle practice in ahead of the World Championships, at Ham and Petersham, and at Humberside.
These competitions are still looking for match officials, so please do get in touch with the Range Master to find out more and secure your place. You can also register for the match using the link below.

Lessons from the range
It is great to share ideas from across the globe and one recent innovation for producing cost-effective water-resistant targets was recently trialed at the Latin American Handgun Championships in Argentina.
At this match regular cardboard targets were treated with a clear water-based varnish. Whilst these cardboard targets were not waterproof like the excellent targets seen across Scandinavian IPSC regions, they did work well for 2-3 squads in pretty damp, rainy conditions. They also worked with normal buff patches.

Developing you and your Institute
Becoming an RO
It is great to see that the vast majority of active NROI members have taken the time to complete their safeguarding training and DBS (or Scottish equivalent) check. I want to personally thank all of you for taking the time to do this.
Planning is now in full swing for the first Level 1 (Range Officer) Seminar, on 5/6 April which will be in the North of England subject to sufficient demand and funding from the UKPSA Council.
If you know any experienced members who would make a great Range Officer why not let them know and don’t forget to tell them the training is free and the UKPSA will meet reasonable expenses for qualified people attending. To find out more and to add them to our mailing list for the upcoming seminars they should contact us at NROI@UKPSA.ORG
Want to progress as a match official?
We are currently planning a UKPSA level II (CRO) and level III (Range Master) seminar for 2025. To attend you need to be an experienced match official and meet the eligibility criteria (see the UKPSA website). To find our more contact us at NROI@UKPSA.ORG
