Interpretations of IPSC Competition Rules – July 2023

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) has issued fresh interpretations for their competition rules. These interpretations were released in compliance with Section 11.8 of the IPSC Competition Rules. Please note that they are pending ratification or modification at the next IPSC Assembly.

1. Optical/Electronic Sights

There have been specific interpretations for optical/electronic sights across multiple rules:

  • IPSC Handgun Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D4a Production Optics Division, Special condition 20)
  • IPSC .22LR Handgun Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D3 Standard Optics Division, Special condition 15)
  • IPSC Action Air Handgun Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D Production Optics Division, Special condition 24)
  • IPSC Pistol Caliber Carbine Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D PCC Optics Division, Special condition 16)
  • IPSC Action Air Pistol Caliber Carbine Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D PCC Optics Division, Special condition 11)

The key interpretation across these rules is that only one optical/electronic sight is permitted to be fitted to the firearm, either as an addition to, or as a replacement of, the rear open sight.

2. Definition of “Negligible”

The term “negligible” has been defined for specific rules:

  • IPSC Handgun Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D4 Production Division, Special condition 18.2) (Appendix D4a Production Optics Division, Special condition 18.2)
  • IPSC Action Air Handgun Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition (Appendix D Production and Production Optics Divisions, Special condition 19.2)

According to the interpretation, “negligible” is defined as up to a maximum of 5% of the total weight of an empty magazine (including all its original parts) offered by the Original Factory Manufacturer (OFM) as standard equipment for the handgun.

3. Grand Senior and Super Senior Categories

Interpretations are also offered for the Grand Senior and Super Senior categories:

  • All IPSC Competition Rules, April 2023 Edition – Except for .22LR Handgun (APPENDIX A2 IPSC Recognition, 3. Individual Categories, (e) Super Senior and (f) Grand Senior)

The interpretation allows Grand Seniors to participate in Super Senior shooting events.

These interpretations reflect IPSC’s dedication to enhancing the sport and providing clarity on the competition rules. Participants are encouraged to thoroughly review these interpretations and understand the changes they bring to their respective divisions and categories.
